16 Unique Lighthouses Shine to South Korea Tourism Scene

Unique lighthouses in the shape of a feeding bottle, a lotus flower and a turtle are gaining a fair share of attention from visitors in Busan, adding a new dynamic to the city’s tourism industry. The lighthouses provide a one-of-a-kind view, towering over the coast with the ocean as the backdrop. On Nov. 25, the Busan Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Busan Regional Maritime Affairs & Port Office held a ceremony to officially celebrate the new baseball-themed lighthouse at Busan Gijang County Chilam Port.

The lighthouse was designed to boost Busan’s image as a baseball city and to celebrate the country’s gold medal in the sport at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The structure is shaped like a baseball, bat and glove and sits in a diamond-shaped foundation that resembles a baseball field. Inside the lighthouse, visitors can see pictures of the gold medal match as well as player autographs and quotes.

The lighthouse cost 130 million won ($113,935) to build and is 10 meters tall. It’s the latest of the city’s unique lighthouses. Busan also boasts lighthouses in the shape of a baby bottle and one that resembles
a lotus flower. The Busan Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Busan Regional Maritime Affairs & Port Office have teamed up to promote these lighthouses and integrate them more closely with the city’s tourism infrastructure.

Under this project, a total of six lighthouses have been introduced in recent times. The Busan Convention & Visitors Bureau plans to develop and roll out a slew or related products, including calendars, post cards and souvenirs featuring these lighthouses. Additionally, it will use the lighthouses in tourism-related efforts.
